"Istorya" is a Masbateño word that means to talk or share a conversation. I chose it because it fits what I wanted this project to offer, a simple place where students can meet someone new, share a thought, or talk without feeling pressured to make a big introduction.
The idea was inspired by random chat sites like Omegle and ChatKOOL, but I wanted to build something focused on students, with a familiar chat layout inspired by apps like Facebook Messenger. Istorya lets you start as a guest without creating an account. You can jump into Quick Chat or choose your college and gender preferences before looking for someone to talk to. Whether the conversation lasts a few minutes or a little longer, there’s no need to force it into anything.
Istorya gives you a few ways to join in. Private chat is for talking with one person, while public chat lets you take part in a shared conversation. Vent is there when you would rather write a post than start a live chat. You can share what’s on your mind, read what other students are going through, or leave a supportive reply. If you don’t want comments on your vent, you can turn replies off before posting.
I made this for students aged 18 and over who are curious, shy, bored, stressed, or simply in the mood to talk. You don’t need to be outgoing or have an interesting story ready. A question about someone’s day can be enough to get started, and it’s okay if you only feel like reading for now.
Being anonymous doesn’t remove the need to be respectful. There’s still a person behind every message and post. I want people to feel comfortable joining in, so respecting boundaries and keeping personal details private matter here. Istorya has moderation checks, but they can’t prevent every harmful message or action. Be careful about what you share, and leave a conversation whenever you feel uncomfortable.
Istorya is a small project that I build and maintain on my own. I’m continuing to improve it, from the way messages look to the small controls that make chatting easier. There’s still more to work on, and I appreciate everyone who gives it a try or takes the time to point out something that could be better.

Additionally, recent studies on university students show that building friendships outside of your usual academic bubble significantly lowers academic anxiety and boosts overall well-being (Li et al., 2025). Whether you're navigating complex projects in your major or just trying to get through midterms, reaching out and talking to someone from a different department can open your mind, build your confidence, and completely turn your day around.

Istorya is a personal project that I made on my own, so it is not officially connected to or sponsored by my school. It is still something I am building bit by bit. If matching feels slow sometimes, that usually just means there are not many people online yet. If you want better and faster chats, tell your friends to hop on too.
