Generic openers create generic conversations. I use a simple three-step structure: context, question, then follow-up. Example: “Long day on campus?” then “What part drained you most?” followed by one short reaction.
This works because it gives the other person something real to answer. It feels less awkward than random small talk and less intense than a personal interview.
What I avoid
- One-word openers with no direction.
- Overly personal questions in the first minute.
- Pressure to reply fast.
- Performative or fake-deep lines that sound copied.
How I recover if a chat is dry
I reset quickly with a topic shift. If the response stays flat, I respectfully leave and find a new chat. I learned that forcing a weak conversation wastes energy for both sides.
