What you can do on Istorya

A note from Keith about private chat, the public room, and Vent, with a few things to know before you join.

Three ways to use Istorya

If you’ve just opened the site, there are a few different ways to use it. You can talk privately with another student, join the public room, or read and share posts in Vent. You don’t have to use every part of the site to find something that suits you.

This is a quick introduction to those choices. I’d rather explain what each one does than tell you it will give you the perfect conversation. That part still depends on the people you meet and whether you feel like talking.

Start without an account

You can enter as a guest. There’s no registration form asking for your email before you can begin. Open setup and choose a mode. Istorya is for students aged 18 and over, and the community rules apply wherever you choose to spend time.

Guest access doesn’t mean the site processes no information. Some information is needed to run sessions, match people, and handle abuse. You can read the Privacy Policy for the details. You also don’t need to install anything. The website works in a browser, with installation available on supported devices.

A private conversation

Quick Chat is the simplest option. It looks for any college and any gender, and sets your own college and gender to “Prefer not to say.” If you want to choose those details or your matching preferences yourself, use Custom instead.

Matching needs another available person whose preferences fit yours. Sometimes you’ll wait. If your choices are narrow, there may be fewer possible matches. The college and gender details are chosen by users, so please don’t treat them as proof of someone’s identity.

Once you’re connected, you can type, reply to a specific message, or react with a heart. You can stop a conversation whenever you want. There isn’t a friends list or a way to search for a previous chat partner afterward.

The public room

Public chat is a shared room rather than a private match. You can choose an optional display name and join the conversation that is happening there. Other participants can read what you send, so it’s worth checking a message before posting anything personal.

Public messages are temporary. Leaving the room doesn’t immediately remove what you sent, but older messages are cleared through scheduled cleanup. Think of it as a conversation happening now, rather than somewhere to keep important notes.

A post in Vent

Vent works differently. You can read posts without waiting for a match, or share something of your own. Pick a flair to give readers a little context, choose how long the post stays in the public feed, and decide whether to allow replies.

People can respond to a post and reply to each other in a thread. If you only want to put your thoughts into words, you can turn replies off before posting. Save your recovery code privately if you want a way to regain access to your posts after changing browsers.

Choose what feels comfortable

You don’t need a clever opening message or a big story to use Istorya. You can read first, join a public discussion, or try a short private chat. You can also close the site when you’ve had enough.

I keep working on the small things that make these choices easier to use. The Updates page covers recent changes. For now, pick the space that fits what you want to do, keep your personal details private, and give the person on the other side room to be themselves.
